Simulation 8Z10   Main

Long Suit or Punt I

  by Richard Pavlicek

Holding a weak hand against a notrump contract, should you lead your long suit? Or a short suit hoping to hit partner? The argument for your long suit is the enemy cards splitting 2-2, allowing your long tricks to be enjoyed without a side entry. The argument for a short suit is that partner is likely to have entries, so his suit will be easier to establish — if you guess which. This assumes a blind auction, of course, as knowing partner’s long suit would make it a no-brainer.

Which card would you lead?

Leads compared: S 10, H 10, D 10. The main decision for long-versus-short is between the majors, but I threw in the last to see how a slightly better minor sequence (D 10-9-8) fares against a major (S 10-9). Place your bets!

For a simulation I created 10,000 random deals with the West hand fixed and the other hands constrained to fit the auction. South: 15-17 HCP; balanced (5-card major allowed if doubleton is J-x or better). North: 8-14 HCP; 10-14 revalued points; no 5+ major; no 7+ minor unless 7-2-2-2; no 4-card major unless 4-3-3-3. East: no 8+ card suit; no 7-card suit unless less than 6.5 playing tricks; else less than 7.5 playing tricks or freakness less than 6 (i.e., to bid without a 7-card suit East would need 7.5+ playing tricks and extreme shape).

Results are shown below. Trick Average shows the average number of tricks won by the defense. Set Percent shows how often the contract is defeated, and Hold Percent how often it is made without an overtrick. The second table compares each lead with every other lead, with the better choice leftmost. Net W-L (matchpoints or board-a-match verdict) counts +1 for a win and -1 for a loss. Net Score and Net IMPs are calculated twice, first with declarer nonvul (green) then with declarer vul (red). Plus values show the net gain over 10,000 deals.

The evidence is clear. With a weak hand and two safe leads, it is better to lead the shorter suit at any form of scoring or vulnerability, and by a wide margin. This assumes that both suits are equally biased (or unbiased) by the enemy bidding, as is the case here for either major. Note however that a safe long major (H 10) is better than a safe short minor (D 10) because the minor is heavily biased to have length in the declaring side. On to Part II. Long Suit or Punt I
