Finesse

 by Richard Pavlicek

A finesse is an attempt to win a trick, or develop a subsequent trick in the same suit, with a card that is not the highest in its suit by leading through an opponent who has a higher card. If the leading side also has the highest card in the suit, it is a primary finesse, which is generally assumed by default. If the leading side does not have the highest card, it is a secondary finesse.
